Why Small Businesses Matter in Greenwich: Alliance Tutoring

Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You’re IT Alliance Tutoring!

Three questions with Alexander W. Merrill, founder of Alliance Tutoring.

Why did you start your business?

I started my small business, Alliance Tutoring in March of 2019 after fifteen years as a classroom teacher with a collection of about ten other colleagues when we realized how much we could really accomplish in one-on-one instruction. In a private tutoring format, we could focus not only on the student’s academics, but also their personal context, including any anxiety, LD, ADHD, or Executive Function challenges.

We saw those issues as inextricable from learning and necessary to help kids maintain their life path, particularly for those who we call “lost souls.” We aim to save the lives of as many of these wandering teens and young adults as we can and keep them on track.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Our best-selling service is what we call “Course Assistance”. We meet with teens/young adults a couple of 2-3 times a week to coach them through the courses they are taking, by supporting them academically and personally. In academic tutoring, the lesson of how to approach academics contextually is often more important and builds confidence that lasts a lifetime. There’s nothing more fulfilling than providing that to a young person who is struggling with tools that can truly alter their lives.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

A lot of local Greenwich small businesses refer clients to us, almost too many to name in the huge network of educational services that exist in Greenwich. But I’ll provide a few of the best here: The Anxiety Institute on 75 Holly Hill Lane is a fantastic outpatient service for those teens and young adults with clinical anxiety struggling to stay in school that we work with frequently. Educational Consultants, who help kids through the college placement process, are also a big collaborator; Daria Rockholz on 270 Greenwich Ave may be the best in the area.
